Steve SILLIMAN (shown at right), a graduate student under Professor Kent LIGHTFOOT at U.C. Berkeley, is currently working on his disseration project at the Petaluma Adobe State Park in Sonoma County, CA. He is searching for the barracks that were once used by the native workers on General VALLEJO's rancho. There is an old map that shows a rough outline of two buildings in the field east of the main Adobe building. In Summer 1996 he did some magnetometer surveys of the area and in Summer 1997 he started some test units to find the cobblestone base of the structures.

As an Anthropology major at Cal, I first got involved in this project in late Spring 1996 when I signed up to work on the initial surveying of the site over the summer. Unfortunately, I had to back out due to other summer commitments, but I got involved once again the following year in Spring 1997. That semester, I had worked for several weeks at Jim ALLAN's Fort Ross project, and then I started at Petaluma Adobe at the end of March. Besides helping on the digs, I also worked in the laboratories on the U.C. Berkeley campus where I cleaned and catalogued the artifacts brought back from the field.

BRIEF DAILY SUMMARIES:

  • 03 / 23 / 1997 — Steve SILLIMAN, Kira BLAISDELL-SLOAN, Geoff HUGHES, Sara NATHANSON, Laura PRIVETT, Tania STELLINI, Scott TRIMBLE. Tania, Sara, and I dug and screened dirt from 52E1S while the others marked out new units on the other side of the field. Near the end of the day we all broke dirt clods in these new surface test units.

  • 04 / 12 / 1997 — Steve SILLIMAN, Valerie ANDRUSHKO, Roger ELLIOTT, Geoff HUGHES, Jessica KAIL, Ruth KNOTEK, Loretta MINTON, Sara NATHANSON, Ed O'NEIL, Michelle PEPITONE, Heather PRICE, Laura PRIVETT, Tania STELLINI, Lori STEVENS, Scott TRIMBLE, Mair VIDAL. Sara, Tania, and I continued digging and dry-screening dirt from 52E1S. Everybody else broke up dirt from the surface test units.

On the first day of the summer season we started work on Unit 57S14W(SW) which will soon be a long trench unit extending from a 1x1 done last February. We hope to find more of the cobblestone flooring. We set up a shade-shelter over the unit to protect us from the heat and we wet-screened the dirt near the creek.

  • 06 / 05 / 1997 — Steve SILLIMAN, Valerie ANDRUSHKO, Melissa BAIRD, Julie BERNARD, Kira BLAISDELL-SLOAN, Agustín DIEZ-CASTILLO, Jon GOODRICH, Patricia HUNT-JONES, Stacey MAUNG, Laura PRIVETT, Tania STELLINI, Scott TRIMBLE, Barb VOSS, Lori ZARR, Linda ZIEGENBEIN. We continued work on the units located in the trench, getting them all down to Level 3.

  • 06 / 08 / 1997 — Steve SILLIMAN, Melissa BAIRD, Jonathan GOODRICH, Laura PRIVETT, Tania STELLINI, Scott TRIMBLE, Barb VOSS, Lori ZARR, Linda ZIEGENBEIN. Today we dug the units about halfway down to the bottom of level four.

  • 06 / 12 / 1997 — Steve SILLIMAN, Valerie ANDRUSHKO, Melissa BAIRD, Julie BERNARD, Agustín DIEZ-CASTILLO, Jonathan GOODRICH, Patricia HUNT-JONES, Stacey MAUNG, Laura PRIVETT, Scott TRIMBLE, Barb VOSS, Lori ZARR, Linda ZIEGENBEIN. Work continued on the trench-unit, exposing two possible walls for the building foundations. Others worked on two units in the midden area.

  • 06 / 22 / 1997 — Steve SILLIMAN, Julie BERNARD, Miriam DOUTRIAUX, Jonathan GOODRICH, Sara NATHANSON, Laura PRIVETT, Tania STELLINI, Scott TRIMBLE, Barb VOSS, Lori ZARR, Linda ZIEGENBEIN. We worked on the same units, but at lower levels now. The exciting find for the day was about 20 white beads melted together. At lunch we celebrated Laura PRIVETT's birthday!

  • 07 / 02 / 1997 — I visited briefly to drop off a new supply of empty film cannisters for putting small artifacts in. I found out that in the previous few days the archaeology project was featured on KFTY TV-50, the radio, and in a Press Democrat article.
